I wonder what the boys have been doing to get invites to Mendaki's Appreciation Tea reception. Whatever they are doing, they surely are doing things right obviously. Anyway the event was attended by the honourable Mr Komeng, our Corporate Relations & Marketing dude, Hairie and our ever dependable IT guy, Amir (whose really there for the free food!).

Komeng and Hairie were completely drenched by the unrelentless monsoon rain while hiking up Fort Canning hill to reach The Legends. Despite the downpour, it did nothing to dampen their spirits to reach the intended venue and win some sympathy from the organisers along the way.

The hi-tea was in recognition to the contributions made by volunteers of various organsations. What they did were no small feat, and they deserve all the respect. Loose Grooves salute all that they have done in order to make this place a better world. Wow. That sounds so corny. The lame statement does not discount the wonderful things you have done people. So give yourself a pat on the back!

ELAN "KING OF ANG MO KIO" GOVAN

When he is not towing the A380 - the world's biggest passenger aircraft, along the Changi runaway, he takes his children out for a drinking, opps! I mean cycling session around his neighbourhood. I doubt his children knew that, their laid back Tontenham Hotspurs loving dad was part of a feared crew. A force not to be reckoned with for sure. For he was a breakdancer! He was so good that they nicknamed him "The King"!

Once battling for supremacy with his headspins, now battling with baldness. It was in between that stage of transition that Elangovan decided to swap perfecting his cartwheels to flawlessly executing the boneless. Skateboarding has been some sort of a livesaver for him as he was going going wayward (He was convicted of shoplifting once - His bounty? A packet of cashew nuts).

"Thank God I was saved by His divine powers through skateboarding man... My late tata (grandpa in Tamil) had wanted to whack me because of my mischeif but somehow he slipped on my skateboard and fell. My Cabellero Bats & Dragon actually saved my life! I vowwed on that day onwards that I will never stop skateboarding!"

Hmmm... Although now we know that Elango skated for the wrong reasons, Loose Grooves nevertheless, is delighted to have Elango came out of retirement and signed on the dotted line to skate for LG over the wad of cash being offered to him. To make the deal sweeter, we have decided to pay him in Ringgit - RM10 to be exact; which he finds useful as he will not have to hassle to the money changer should his son intends to send him to an old folks' home in JB. The pleasure is ours dear King. Hail King!!!

Komeng is fiercely proud of his Bugis heritage. Fearless warriors. Excellent seafarers. Outstanding adventurers. Oh how we wish he is one of those... He cannot swallow his pills and insists on pounding them. Even the dependable Poh-Chai got him chocked once! He is a terrible swimmer and a horrible navigator. But one thing that is commendable about our dear Komeng is that he is without a doubt, a man of peace and we should adopt his non-violence stance against aggression. Below are instances where we should try to avoid at all costs!

SIT & DESTROY

Ah... Let us start the new year by making new friends! Meet Ah Leong who is in his late 30s. Do not be deceived by his looks though. This humble guy actually loves listening to death metal! He was introduced by our friend, Adam. Both of them were actually childhood friends back in Aljunied.

Leong's tragic disability was a result of a freak accident involving his motorbike which almost took his life. His body was a total mess and is now half man - half machine. Literally. Because what you are seeing is a surgical wonder! More than half of his body is implanted with metal fixtures. So why skate rather than being safely secured on a wheelchair?

"Haiya...! Boring la. At least I feel free and happy whenever I am on a skateboard."

Freedom to run amok against this discriminative society who dismiss the less able as a burden, who equals their inability to charity. How sad to see the state of graciousness in Singapore still leaves much to be desired despite years of courtesy campaigns by the government. No wonder Leong is all about destroying these preconceived ideas.

Loose Grooves has always been about the everyday man on the streets rather than seeking free exposure on some national media by volunteering at a big charity organisation. (Well, the reason we put this post up is firstly, it is because this blog is read only by the boys for our own amusement. I mean who the hell would read some random ramblings by the most professional unprofessional crew on the island? Secondly, it is nothing more than an ego booster for us to show that our English proficiency is far superior than Komeng's!)

The crew at LG were so impressed by Leong's optimist nature that they decided to change his ten year old Shorty's and present him a brand new deck. The grin on his face upon test riding on his 64mm wheels puts a tear on an emotionally wrecked Komeng.

So if you see someone zooming past you while seated on a skateboard in Aljunied, tell him we said hi!

ROY SIGNS THE DEAL

Today marks an important event in our calender; Loose Grooves' signing of an undiscovered gem in the east. Khalid or Roy as he is more popularly known in the local circuit, has agreed to be LG's first pro rider for an undisclosed sum (strong rumours suggest that he was only worth 50 Baht).

We got to work right away with the photo shoot for his promotional posters. The same goes to the two photographers present who must be scratching their heads bald, figuring how to Photoshop their model. Good luck to them.

Bless you Singapore for producing talents like Khalid. We wonder how anybody can miss someone with such a humongous proportion – we mean potential.

BIONIC NO MORE

Our six million (Monopoly) dollar towkay was warded into Changi General Hospital today for an operation on his right hand. The doctors have finally lost their cool with Komeng's endless pester to have his metal implant removed. He reasoned that the feel of having a metal plate screwed to his busted knuckle irritates the hell out of him – although we think he is actually trying a shot at prolonging his MC record of three months. Well at least he can give his fractured shoulder a proper rest now. Get well soon Komeng...!!!

DRESS CODE: BATIK

Is it his signature Wayfarer plus messy beard and shaggy moustache? Is it his way with the pakciks (uncles)? Well, he bloody looks like one though. Anyway, Loose Grooves was invited by Mendaki to attend a forum to represent the Informal Interest Group. It was held at the very posh Sheraton Towers. Komeng was ushered to table number two (try to identify him through the video) while Khai was given the free seating pass at the back row. Guess who were seated with our Mr Komeng? Members of Parliament - Dr Fatimah Lateef and Mr Zaqy Mohd, Ain Society's CEO, some director dude from some company, 3 industry heavyweights whom Komeng forgot their names and who they represent (but he knows they are influential!) and the ever smiling Kak Oni from the Suria kids' show Krayon.

Intimidated? Komeng? Nah... He was more intimidated by Khai who wore his batik-printed Converse to the event!

The Community Leaders' Forum (CLF) which was set up in 2003, provides the platform for the Malay/Muslim Voluntary Sector to work together to address issues affecting the community and build the capacity to facilitate the interventions efforts. The introduction of sports to engage the youth have proved effective in tackling anti-social behaviour. Although not entirely, but the progressive numbers are encouraging. It is through these interest groups that the committee understand further the harsh realities faced by the kids.

The good people at Freshpark should really look into the possibility of getting Andre 2000 from the Outkast to become their spokesman. A revolutionary idea paired with a professional outlook. And that is why Loose Grooves is proud to be in partnership with an outstanding outfit. We bought a couple of their ramps recently and immediately put them to the test. Acit and Fendy were trashing them non-stop for a full hour. Their verdict? They were sincerely amazed with its durability. The initial assembly was a no-brainer as you can never go wrong by following their very comprehensive package. Connect, skate, fold. That is how we roll! Ain't nobody dope as me I'm dressed so fresh so clean...

THE DAY ODDIE'S BROTHER HAS A NAME

“I will call you back in an hour okay dear?” That was what Komeng promised his missus for their daily phone chat session which ended she calling him a liar when he called her nine hours later. Komeng, Khai and his wife (Siti), were at the office where they stayed up the whole night making last minute flyers for a showcase the following morning. Siti called it quits at around two in the morning by embracing the bolster. Khai was left at Komeng's mercy in getting it done. Khai's patience was tested to the extreme while Komeng was at his eccentric best. Thank god there was no casualties (Note: Komeng was not harmed during the process, although there was a mouse cord readily available to Khai).

The Sports Education Programme (SEP) Showcase held at Nan Hua Primary School featured service providers offering their endorsed programmes for 2009. It is to facilitate the planning of sports programmes by principals and teachers for you kids. Additionally, as part of the effort to promote the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), there was a dedicated corner reserved for sports providers offering some of the 26 sports (including BMX!) under the Games.

Loose Grooves was categorised under the Extreme/Adventure Sports. It was a slow morning which picked up pace after word got around that there was actually a company which conducts skateboarding and bmx lessons. We were met with lots of surprised faces and congratulatory handshakes in getting these two sports endorsed. Our booth generated a great buzz all the way till closing time. The highlight of the day was when a special school enquire if we can customise our courses to fit their objectives. That is surely one challenge that LG would not back out from.

PUSH DON'T POLLUTE

Komeng was hanging out with Khai at the defunct 107 when Mr Johnson walked into the shop. While Khai was tending to Mr Johnson, he was also gesturing his finger towards Komeng while Komeng was busy digging away for the elusive pot of gold in his nose. "Ah...you must be the one in-charge then?". Komeng smiled and nodded, contemplating whether he should shake his hand with a piece of bogey still sticking at the tip of his fingernail!

To cut the chase, Loose Grooves got invited to perform a BMX demonstration at Kampung Ubi-Kembangan Community Centre for their Green & Bike 2008 campaign. Member of Parliment, Dr Ong Seh Hong was present as its Guest of Honour. It was organised by the People's Association to promote various aspect of cycling as part of their “Family Life Champion” programme. Their aim to encourage family bonding through sports, seems to be very well received going by the crowd turnout.

We were suddenly psyched up that sleepy drizzling morning by the presence of two Redbull hotties distributing their energy drinks all around. Well they gave both Shah and Shalihin wings indeed! Since this event was the first proper exposure for the company, we decided to set up booth to display the Skate Pass programme as well.

There was this one kid who refuses to accompany his mum to cycle, choosing instead to stay with us to learn how to skate. And within an hour, he was rolling all over! Big props to Bukit for the ad hoc lesson. Here are some of the pictures taken with our sugar filled bloodshot eyes on the viewfinder.

Rejoice boys & girls, for we are creating history! For the first time ever in Singapore, Loose Grooves is proud to announce that both skateboarding and bmx have been officially endorsed by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and Ministry of Education (MOE) to be taught in schools, under their Sports Education Programme (SEP). What does that mean for you guys?

It simply means that all you kids can now learn how to skate/ride at your very own schools! So what are you waiting for? Go badger your PE teachers!

Big up to the crew for your encouragement and endless lobbying to get these sports recognised under the programme. It is a brand new day!

REVOLUTION IN A BOX

No, it cannot rip you into halves while you are in it as this is no Copperfield illusion. This humble box will however inject more vibrance into the school sporting scene. Yes, you heard me right. Schools! Just you wait!

YOU HAVE NOT HEARD THE LAST OF ME!!!

Containing his anger has been a trait well known among Komeng's circle of friends. It is unbelievably hard to catch him fuming mad over something. Even insulting his parents will only get you a raised eyebrow and a sneer (he IS that cool). But the selection committee has gotten on his nerves apparently! It was not so much that his application was rejected, but he just could not stomach the reason behind it.

"If cup-stacking (an endorsed activity by SSC mind you) is considered a sport, then ping-pong should be considered extreme! How I wished that my dad had picked up some plastic cups over at Ikea instead of my first skateboard at Toy'R'Us when I was six. And I can progress all the way to stacking soda bottles. Now beat that you cup stacker!"

Whatever it is, he is going to appeal against the decision. Time to apply his psychic powers into good use.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

After months of exhausting negotiations, Loose Grooves has signed an agreement with Skate Pass LLC (United States) to be its sole official licensee in Singapore, the first in Asia. We are the third country in the world outside US (apart from Canada & Germany) to receive exclusive rights to conduct the Skate Pass programme.

The Skate Pass branding is synonymous with skateboarding in schools curriculums in over fourteen states in the US. Partnering the best in the business, you can be assured of safe quality training that will benefit the seasoned skater as well as anyone who is interested to take it up as a sport activity.

WEEKEND WARRIORS

Last night, we had our weekly shredding session at Kaki Bukit. It was meant to be a farewell skate jam with Oddie before he flies off to Scotland with his wife to further their studies. But alas, partying with the missus to Paul Van Dyk proved to be more meaningful than sweating it out with your long time skate buddies. See how marriage life have changed you, you heartless punk? But we love you still.You too Erni! Hehe.

Anyway, Loren decided to join us that night. We had met at a skate forum only recently, and he was eager to test out his brand new Earthwing longboard. It was also my virgin ride on my Santa Cruz. Bukit hesitated to ride his Dogtown which he got from wifey for his birthday and eventually deem it too sacred to roll on. Mat Rep has finally replaced the grip tape for his Sector Nine and was determined to execute the knee slide perfectly. And here we go!

Loren can skate from Philippines to Singapore without ever getting tired. Best believe.

Loose Grooves is proud to be the one and only company in Singapore that has its Skateboarding & BMX curriculum officially endorsed by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC). Our focus is to expose and educate the young about these two often scoffed at sports starting in schools.

Through this blog, we try to create an atmosphere as welcoming and friendly as possible and encourage every aspect of our business to be as enjoyable as it can. Then again we do not consider ourselves a business, because Loose Grooves is a lifestyle.
